Overview

The Cartier Santos de Cartier Medium WSSA0029 carries the Santos' design language in its fullest classical expression: stainless steel case, silvered opaline dial, at a size that sits naturally across a range of wrists without the Large's more assertive 39.8mm footprint. The design originates from Louis Cartier's 1904 commission for aviator Alberto Santos-Dumont, and the square case with exposed screws from that original brief has remained in continuous production in some form since.

The case is stainless steel, 35.1mm square, with eight exposed screws on the polished bezel. The silvered opaline dial carries Roman numerals, a chemin-de-fer minute chapter ring, and blued steel sword-shaped hands. Under varied light it shifts between grey and silver, reading warmer and richer than a plain white dial. The composition is classically Cartier: legible, architectural, and built around the dial's typography rather than complications or material embellishment.

The movement is the Calibre 1847 MC, Cartier's in-house automatic with a 42-hour power reserve, anti-magnetic nickel-phosphorus components, and 100-metre water resistance. The watch ships with both the integrated stainless steel bracelet and a leather strap; Cartier's QuickSwitch system allows interchangeable fitting without tools, and the SmartLink bracelet permits tool-free link adjustment. For a watch that moves between dress and casual contexts, the two-strap configuration covers the full range from the box.

The Santos Medium in steel holds a specific place in the secondary market: it is less available than the Large, and buyers who have sized the 39.8mm Large against their own wrist and found it too prominent arrive at the Medium as the resolution.
