Overview 

The Rolex Submariner Date 116610LN introduced two changes to the Submariner at once when it launched in 2010: a Cerachrom ceramic bezel insert, the first on a steel Submariner, and the Glidelock clasp, Rolex's tool-free extension system patented two years earlier on the Deepsea. The case itself, broader lugs and more sculpted crown guards while holding the 40mm diameter, is what collectors call the Super Case; Rolex never used that name officially, but the term has stuck because the shift in proportions was real even without a diameter change. Both changes together moved the Submariner from its older, thinner-cased generation into the profile that still defines the current 41mm Submariner.

The case is 40mm Oystersteel, and against the earlier 16610 it reads noticeably more substantial: broader lugs, deeper crown guards, more presence on the wrist without a larger stated size. The bezel is a glossy black Cerachrom insert on a unidirectional 60-minute scale, paired with a black dial in the same finish. Date sits at 3 o'clock under the Cyclops lens. Water resistance is 300 metres, the Submariner Date standard.

The Calibre 3135 delivers a 48-hour power reserve, notably shorter than the 70 hours of the current-generation 3235 that replaced it in 2020. It is certified as a Superlative Chronometer to the same ±2 seconds per day standard Rolex still uses. The Oyster bracelet carries the Oysterlock safety clasp with Glidelock, giving roughly 20mm of tool-free extension in 2mm increments, useful over a wetsuit and equally useful for a wrist that changes size through the day.

Within the ceramic-bezel Submariner generation, the 116610LN is the baseline black-on-black configuration, more restrained than the green-bezel 116610LV Hulk, and the reference most directly comparable to today's 126610LN once you account for the 1mm case size difference. Discontinued in 2020, it now sits where most discontinued steel Submariners eventually land: demand remains steady, and preowned examples in genuine condition trade close to where they did as new production wound down. We see steady interest in the 40mm case specifically, from buyers who prefer collecting a prior model.
