Overview 

The Rolex Sea-Dweller 126600 solved a problem that had defined the model for fifty years. Every Sea-Dweller since 1967 had gone without a Cyclops lens: the adhesive used to bond a magnifying lens to a domed crystal couldn't hold under the pressures the watch was rated to survive. Advances in crystal engineering and adhesive technology let Rolex add the lens in 2017 without compromising the 1,220-metre depth rating, and the 126600 also brought back the single-line red "Sea-Dweller" text used on the original 1967 reference. Both changes arrived together, marking the watch's 50th anniversary.

The case is 43mm Oystersteel, up from the 40mm of the outgoing reference 116600, built around a Helium Escape Valve that lets trapped gas vent safely during a saturation diver's decompression. Water resistance is 1,220 metres. The black dial uses Chromalight for the hour markers and hands, with blue luminescence readable well past the depth this watch will realistically see. The unidirectional bezel carries a Cerachrom insert with a 60-minute scale, and the Cyclops sits over the date, the addition that took fifty years and a crystal engineering solution to arrive.

The Calibre 3235 delivers a 70-hour power reserve, Chronergy escapement, and Parachrom hairspring, certified as a Superlative Chronometer to ±2 seconds a day. It is the same generation movement across the current Professional line, chosen here for the same reasons it works in the Submariner: shock resistance and magnetic resistance matter more on a dive watch than anywhere else in the catalogue.

Within Rolex's dive range, the Sea-Dweller sits between the Submariner and the Deepsea: deeper rated than the Submariner's 300 metres, without the Deepsea's larger case and Ringlock System. Against its own predecessor, the 116600, this reference carries the size and Cyclops that split opinion when it launched in 2017. Some buyers still prefer the smaller 40mm no-date profile, but demand has settled toward the 126600 as the standard modern Sea-Dweller. We see steady demand for well-kept examples like this one; full sets with papers now are trading well below the current retail price.
